Patient Safety is non-negotiable as providers discuss progress on the NHS’ Safety Strategy,
October 24, 2023:
The annual RLDatix People Summit was held in Bournemouth last week. As NHS Trusts work hard to implement vital infrastructure to facilitate the delivery of the NHS’ Patient Safety Strategy and Long-Term Workforce Plan a key message was that patient safety is non-negotiable.
The summit was an excellent opportunity for colleagues from risk and workforce to come together to discuss priorities and identify areas where they need support. More than 400 people attended.
A key area of focus and discussion for RLDatix colleagues, NHS England and providers of healthcare was progress against the Learn from Patient Safety Events (LFPSE) service.
Marcos Manhaes, Head of NRLS and LFPSE for NHS England reinforced the vision for the programme explaining that for; “people working on the transition of the system from NRLS to LFPSE this is not the end but the beginning, this infrastructure will enable people to change their process and approach locally to work on elements of the NHS’ Patient Safety Strategy.”
Marcos went on to acknowledge the significant transformation across the health and care system, saying; “Thank you to everyone who has been on this journey of the implementation of LFPSE. We understand that it has been stressful and we’ve not always got things right first time and we’re working things out as we go along with the help and support of everybody. We are together in this and we will continue to improve as we go along - but a big, big thank you to everyone to get us to this point.”
RL Datix is one of the main vendors supporting health and care organisations to transition to LFPSE, working directly with 139 of the 222 organisations that need to transition (66%). Following the compliant assessment of DCIQ and DatixWeb in September 2022, today 28% of NHS hosted customers are live and reporting to LFPSE.
“There is still work to do to further support our customers with the transition.” Said Simon Biles, General Manager of Risk and Compliance at RLDatix.
By the end of this year all 41 cloud hosted providers will have transitioned, however for trusts whose software is held locally and who may have more local variations they need more support.
Barbara Staruk, Chief Product Officer, RLDatix said; “Historically incident reporting was highly customised, LFPSE will standardise historical reporting and reduce variation. We’re therefore providing additional support to customers to overcome this variation.”
Simon added, “It has been great to hear from trusts over the last two days who are live and beginning to see the benefits, but having listened to those customers who have locally hosted solutions or that just need more help from us we are introducing more one to one support, community forum clinics and groups.”
West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospital NHS Trust has recently transitioned to LFPSE, Patient Safety System Manager, Yongmei LI said: “We were one of the first acute trusts to go live with LFPSE. We prepared for the project in advance with support from RL Datix and this preparation ensured the transition was smooth when we went live.
“We’re so grateful for all the support that has been given by the LFPSE team at RLDatix to help us go live. “
As well as supporting NHS trusts with the transition to LFPSE, the RLDatix Team have also helped trusts to make use of the functionality within LFPSE which makes it easier to make a report and saves busy nursing and medical staff time.
Richard Harrington, Information Systems Manager at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust said: “The LFPSE auto-population has been a large help, it’s reduced the burden and decreased the time to report. It’s also reduced the duplication of work, as if staff select one answer, any relevant answers are auto-populated. Which has been a large time saver and helped us to go live.’
At the summit the RLDatix team worked with a group of customers to establish a focus group to innovate, shape ongoing service support and product updates. Throughout November and December there will be regional workshops and additional training to continue to support the progress of the LFPSE transition.
