Connected Healthcare Summit Day One: A Vision for the Future
San Diego, March 18, 2025: Day One of the Connected Healthcare Summit 2025 set an inspiring tone, uniting leaders, innovators and frontline teams to turn patient safety challenges into opportunities.
Reimagining Patient Safety
In a powerful and uplifting keynote, RLDatix CEO Dan Michelson called for a fundamental shift in patient safety—from a reactive function to a more proactive, systemwide strategy that enables health systems and hospitals to tackle patient safety and medical harm challenges at their core. With 1 in 3 patients experiencing harm, more than half preventable, he emphasized embedding safety into daily operations through transparency, learning and connected technology.
Michelson outlined three key assets driving the future: reputation, workforce and data, aligning them with RLDatix’s core solutions:
Innovation Driving Change
RLDatix Chief Product Officer Barbara Staruk took audiences on an innovation journey, bringing to life how forward-thinking modernization has long-lasting, positive impacts across health systems and hospitals. In addition, Staruk unveiled key product advancements, including enhanced clinical and patient experience metrics, and SmartEntry reimagined for seamless documentation.
Staruk discussed what is available today, what’s ahead and the true definition of innovation – solving problems in new ways. With the help of a few partners, including Shaina Hogan, Director of Policy Administration at PeaceHealth and Chris Longhurst, Chief Clinical and Innovation Officer and Executive Director of the Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at UCSD Health, Staruk illustrated how RLDatix is leveraging innovative solutions and technology, such as AI.
“When it comes to AI, our focus is on making our partners’ jobs easier,” Staruk said. “Our goal is to improve your job, not replace it.”
Reconnecting to the 'Why'
In the Exploring Our ‘Why:’ Patient Safety Panel, RLDatix Chief Patient Safety & Risk Officer, Dr. Tim McDonald, led a powerful discussion on the human impact of safety initiatives. Joined by advocates Armando Nahum, co-founder and COO of Patients for Patient Safety US; Dr. Kristin Mekeel, Chief, Transplant Surgery and ACMO, Surgical Quality at UCSDH; and Dr. Sandip Godambe, Chief Medical Officer at Rady Children’s Hospital - Orange County, industry leaders and audience members shared personal stories, reinforcing the notion that every action in healthcare impacts and shapes real lives.
